THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL

(WITH VALOR)

TO

DOUGLAS L. PHILLIPS,

Staff Sergeant Douglas L. Phillips distinguished himself by heroism as Special Operations Combat Controller while engaged in ground operations against an opposing armed force at Point Salinas Airport, Grenada from 25 October to 26 October 1983.

On 25 October 1983, Sergeant PhiIIips performed a combat parachute assault jump from five hundred feet in order to clear the active runway of heavy machinery and debris which were denying access to the objective runway.

Sergeant Phillips was responsible for the expeditious flow of assault aircraft into the objective area, establishing air traffic control procedures and coordinating air

support for the Ground Force Commander.

He was also responsible for providing vital forward air guide services which successfully eliminated several direct enemy threats to the airfield.

Additionally, he assisted in the critical and orderly evacuation of United States citizens. He put forth the maximum professional effort while continuously exposed to hostile enemy firepower.

By his heroic actions and unselfish dedication to duty, Sergeant Phillips has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
